Custom connectors are not on every plan, and a work account can have them switched off by an administrator. If yours has them, the setup below takes about three minutes. If not, the second route works from any account.
The direct route.
Point a connector at the endpoint and the WhatsApp tools appear in the chat you already use. Custom connectors are gated by plan and, on a work account, by whatever your workspace admin allows. Start by checking that, since it is the one thing that decides whether this takes three minutes or none.
When the connector is not available.
The server is a public MCP endpoint, so anything you build with the OpenAI SDKs can call it directly. This is also the route if you want the assistant running unattended rather than answering you in a chat window.
This is you asking about your own inbox, not the thing that answers customers overnight. That one runs on its own and lives elsewhere.
What came in, who is still waiting, and which threads went quiet, without scrolling the inbox to work it out.

Whether ChatGPT can add a custom connector is decided by your plan and your workspace, and OpenAI changes where that line sits. None of that reaches the endpoint: when the connector is unavailable, the same server still works from your own agent.
